Assay for Heat-Stable Enterotoxin of Escherichia coli in Newborn Mice

Abstract
|
|
|
To evaluate the heat-stable enterotoxin(ST) production by Escherichia coli(E. coli), an experiment has been conducted on 102 strains of E. coli isolated from scouring piglets by infant mouse assay.
The results are summarized as follows:
1. Fifty three stains of E. codi among 102 strains tested were ST positive.
2. Production of ST varied deparding on serotypes of E. coli and in some serotypes even though they belong u5 the same serotypey, .some strains were ST positive while: some were negative.
3. The mean ratio of but weight and body weight of the mice injected with ST positive strains was 0.114 and the value was for greater than 0.083 for which Word health Organization recommended as the criterion for ST production of E. coli. The mean ratio of the ST positive strains was significently higher than those of ST negative and placebo groups.
4. Histopathological lesions of tire mice injected with ST via the stomach were characterized as swelling of intestinal villi, dilatation of the central lacteal and perivascular edema.
